यार जुलाहे ! ( Dear Weaver – Gulzar

I am inspired by Gulzar’s ‘Dear Weaver ‘ poem to write for this week’s Poetry Jam (How to) prompt and tried to write ‘How to weave a relationship’.
How to weave a relationship
learn from a weaver
a technique so clever
to keep knots and breaks invisible,
by an effort and love invincible,
If he ignored the knots and move forward,
lumps increased and became stalwart
care and time makes a relationship
Original Gulzar’s poem is below in Hindi and also a translated version by me in English,

Mujhko bhi tarkeeb sikha koi yaar julahe,
Aksar tujhko dekha hai ki taana bunte
Jab koi dhaga toot gaya ya khatam hua
Phir se bandh ke
Aur sira koi jod ke usme,
Aage bunne lagte ho
Tere is taane mein lekin
Iq bhi ganth girhe buntar ki
Dekh nahin sakta hai koi,

Meine to ik baar buna tha ek hi rishta,
Lekin uski saari girahein
Saaf nazar aati hain mere yaar julahe.

Dear weaver! Teach me this trick of yours,
I have often seen you weaving a warp
Whenever any thread broke or finished
You tied it again
and add to it another end
Keep on weaving forward
But in your warp
Not a single knitting knot
Is visible to others
I have only woven a relationship once,
But its all knots
are clearly visible my dear weaver.

  1. I like the source of your inspiration as well as your poem. I do think sometimes there seems to be a 'trick' to weaving relationships. Sometimes indeed they seem to get so knotted up they are hard to get untangled! Perhaps then one needs that master weaver's help!

  2. nice…i lived with a weaver for a year…and used to enjoy watching her at the loom sending the shuttle across…seeing the act of creation, one thread at a time….very cool write….wise
